St Andrew’s Church, Clevedon, dating from the 12th century, stands on a cliff to the west of the town and has many interesting features. It is a very fine example of Romanesque architecture, and it remains a prominent landmark, with its tower clearly visible up and down the Bristol Channel.
For over eight hundred years this has been a place of worship where people have come to pray and praise God. It is the original Parish Church of Clevedon and is still known locally as ‘The Old Church’.
The building speaks not only of history, but also of the Christian faith of those who have used it and use it still today. The actual dedication of the Church is to St Andrew, the patron saint of fishermen. It is probable that there was a small fishing community based at the foot of the two hills, Church Hill and Wains Hill, between which the church lies. It is not known how or when the Church was first established, but it is thought that it was initially just a small fishermen’s Chapel. It is also thought that the oldest parts of the present Church are almost certainly built on Saxon foundations. St Andrew’s Church is a place where people continue to meet with God and to demonstrate that the faith of those who created it is still as relevant now as it has ever been.
