The United Benefice Banner: St Andrew's, St Peter's and Christchurch.
The United Benefice Banner Group was formed in 1988 and has been making scriptural banners ever since, for use in the three Clevedon churches which constitute the United Benefice (St Andrew's, St Peter's and Christchurch).
The Banner Group traditionally used to meet on Wednesdays at 2pm in the St Andrew's Church Centre, and the members spent a couple of hours designing and making banners, using many different artistic and practical skills. In addition to those used week-by-week here in Clevedon they have made several as gifts for churches abroad. These include one sent to Metangula in Mozambique in 2008. Sadly, since the untimely death of Mary Walters, the group has not met on a regular basis for a little while now but we are sure that the group will start to meet again before too long.
To celebrate the group's 20th birthday an exhibition was staged in St. Andrew's Church and Centre on May 24th, 25th and 26th in 2008. As many as possible of the 50 banners which had been made by that date were on display.
The group has made many banners for various special occasions, such as Christmas, Easter, marriages, funerals, wedding anniversaries. One was made to mark the new Millennium. A special one was made for the memorial service of Hillary Everest, a regular member of the group.
A special banner, named The Open Door, was created in 2012 to mark the retirement of The Rev. Terry Baillie. The members of the Banner Group wanted to share the thought that God has opened a door which no-one can close because He wants to bless Terry and Margaret in the work that he still has for them to do.
